--I don't enjoy going to the polls. It would be super convenient to vote from home.
--People with disabilities can't always get out to vote. If people could vote online, many of those folks probably would.
--People who live out in the country, far from towns, would probably be more likely to vote if they could do it at home using the Internet.
--There's a lot of room for corruption....I think someone would be able to manipulate the results. Look at what George Bush did in the last election (2004)...imagine what could happen in the future!
Check out this quote:
"Those who cast the votes decide nothing.
Those who count the votes decide everything."-- Josef Stalin
Muy interesante, no?
Seriously, though, I don't know much about online voting. Is it a good idea--or not? I don't know...but you need to figure out where you stand on this issue so that you can be ready for Tuesday's test!
Can you guys help me a bit? Please leave some comments in which you educate me. Let's pretend I don't know anything at all...
What is online voting? How does it work?
Is it being used anywhere? If so, where, why and how?
What are some of the advantages of online voting
What are some of the disadvantages?
How would you like to vote in the next election (if you could)? Why?
Thanks!
PS--Feel free to ask a grammatical or word choice type of question, using a sentence you might want to put in your essay....

Hello. Prof. Egle. I was reading about voting online in Ukrania.
Proponents of online voting have argued that it could increase voter turnout. In Ukrania only a minority of the population have internet access, and many no voters are unlikely to have access to coputers. However, it is not means certain. The Goverment will look to making online voting democratically acceptable when most voters have easy access to the internet.
Cinthia--
So...what you're saying is that online voting could increase voter turnout. That's a great thing, don't you think?
What's a "no voter"? Did you mean "non-voter"? Just checking....
Thanks for your comment!
I was looking on internet, and I ralize that Estonia uses voting online for presidential election. Something really sorprinsingly is that most of the articles say something good about it. To me, I dont think that is something really good because the results can be manipulated easier. However,i have to accept that the well use of this sistem can produce good result.
Hi prof. Egle! I hope you feel better. I surprised that you do not know about online voting:-). Let me try to explain to you what I know. First is, online voting that is way of vote for anyone or anything by using computers or computerized equipment to direct votes in an election. In our case that is voting for a president. Every citizen can vote for a president at the same day using on-line. By touching screen or use keyboard voters transmit their voted ballot to election officials over the internet.
There are some advantages that I can see. It is convenience and mobility, calculation votes immediately and less cost, and finally voter participation. Convenience and mobility mean that voters can vote using computer at home or work, or other comfortable for them place with the minimal time and skill. By the way people can even use a cell phone to vote. Voter participation means more people will take part in voting because of easy use. That could be young people such a students whose participation in last decade has decreased. Also it could be people with disabilities or those who before was not able to vote because of busy schedule.
The disadvantages that is not everyone can afford having computer at home or they do not know how to use it. Other minus it is not secure or viruses can damage system, so election might have to be canceled.
Online voting happened in the USA in the 2000 Arizona Democratic primary, in which almost 40000 voters cast their votes on-line.
I am personally cannot vote because I am not the USA citizen. Another reason that is I am not interested in politic. However, if I would, I will prefer online voting.
I hope you found my explanation beneficial and I hope I remember what I have written tomorrow:<(. Will be great! See you.
Hi,Professor Lisa. I hope you feel better now. After read some articles, I’ll see that there are more advantages than disadvantages in casting a vote by the internet than by paper ballot. However, online voting is not a good idea yet because there are a lot of risks such as hackers gain access to the computer system illicitly as certain groups attack the election process by power outage or simply by introducing viruses in the system. This situation can happen in major elections where big decisions are taken and there are people who want to destabilize the democracy. I know the revolution technology is changing and affecting everything, but the process of online voting is still in a pilot or trial program in certain places in mid term elections. Definitely, in the future with the globalization and the erradication of the digital divide, online voting will be the best choice, but not now.
